UEFA have confirmed that if Fiorentina win the Conference League and finish outside the top seven, there will be nine Italian teams in Europe next season.

There had been some genuine confusion over the state of play, as things were shaken up by Italy getting an extra Champions League spot due to topping the rankings for club competition.

If Fiorentina win the Conference League Final against Olympiacos on May 29, then they will automatically qualify for the Europa League.

Fiorentina key to extra UEFA spot

UEFA director Giorgio Marchetti told Sky Sport Italia on Sunday evening that if the Viola do lift the trophy and finish eighth in Serie A, then the Conference League spot will go to the ninth-placed team instead.

That will be either Torino or Napoli, going into the final round of the campaign.

It means the top nine sides in Serie A will all qualify for UEFA tournaments, as the top five (or six, depending on Atalanta) enter the Champions League, sixth, seventh and Fiorentina get into the Europa League, then ninth the Conference League.
